CLOUD COMPUTING ADOPTION AND FINANCIAL REPORTING INTEGRITY IN NIGERIA: THE MODERATING ROLE OF DATA SECURITY AND INTERNAL CONTROLS

Abstract

The study examined cloud computing adoption and financial reporting integrity in financial institutions in Nigeria, with emphasis on the moderating role of data security and internal controls. A descriptive survey research design was adopted to obtain quantitative data from selected financial institutions. The population comprised accounting, audit, and information technology personnel, from which a representative sample was selected using stratified sampling techniques. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure cloud adoption, data security practices, internal control systems, and financial reporting integrity. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze the data and test the hypotheses. Findings revealed that cloud computing adoption significantly improves financial reporting integrity by enhancing accuracy, timeliness and accessibility of financial information. The results further indicated that data security and internal controls significantly moderate the relationship, strengthening the positive effects of cloud adoption on reporting outcomes. Institutions with strong security and control systems recorded higher levels of reporting reliability and compliance. The study concluded that cloud computing adoption contributes to improved financial reporting integrity when supported by effective data security and internal control frameworks. Recommendations emphasised the need for enhanced security systems, regulatory compliance, interdepartmental collaboration and staff training to optimise the benefits of cloud technologies in financial reporting.
